What’s going on in Barking

 Coffee Afternoons

I hold regular Coffee Afternoons on a ward-by-ward basis. This is my way of meeting the residents of Barking and the heart of Dagenham. I want to hear what your concerns are or what issues are affecting you in the local area. So please come and join me for a cup of tea, a biscuit and a chat.

Please Get In Touch for more information on how I will be working in the coming months. To find out about the issues we discussed in my previous Coffee Afternoons please click HERE.

Street Meetings

Throughout the year I hold Street Meetings across Barking and the heart of Dagenham. If you have a community concern that is affecting you and your neighbours, then I can help you find a solution at a future Street Meeting. Please use the Get In Touch page of this website for further details.

Fighting Police Cuts

Rising crime is a problem for Barking, and violent crime has been increasing across London for several years. I will fight all further cuts to policing, after 13 years of Tory police cuts enough is enough.

I am campaigning to keep our police station in Barking open, it is essential Barking has a police station for residents to use. I have also been supporting community youth groups working hard to offer young people alternatives to gangs in the borough. Barking deserves to be safe and to have a visible police presence in all communities, this will be a top priority for me over the next year.

Improving Transport Connections

Improving transport connections across Barking and Dagenham is important for bringing new jobs and opportunities to the area, and for helping people to get around. In the past I’ve campaigned to get a dedicated hospital bus route and worked with C2C to ensure their new stations in the borough are fully accessible.

I worked hard with commuters and Transport for London to ensure that the Gospel Oak to Barking Overground line received the new trains it was promised.

I’m also monitoring road redevelopments in the south of the borough to make sure residents and businesses are not negatively impacted by major changes.

Thames Life

The south of the borough is now part of one of the largest regeneration projects in the country. The Barking Riverside development will create over 10,000 homes. Alongside new train stations, local services and commercial spaces that are being created to support the redevelopment.

This will mean a big change for Barking. I’m determined this process is inclusive and the local community are at the heart of regeneration. That’s why I’m playing a leading role supporting Thames Life.

Thames Life is a community-led project that works to put residents at the heart of decision making. They are working to improve the local environment, create new jobs and improve education and healthcare. It’s essential Barking and Dagenham residents play a part in shaping their community, so get involved!
